Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • Nonstick cooking spray (for greasing the baking dish)
  • 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter (cut into tablespoon-sized pieces)
  • One 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows
  • 5 1/4 cups of crispy rice cereal (e.g. , Rice Krispies)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of blue gel food coloring (refer to Cooks Note)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of red gel food coloring
  • 1/4 cup of mixed red , white, and blue sprinkles

Instructions

  • Start by lining a 9-by-9-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, making sure to leave a 2-inch overhang on two opposite sides. Lightly spray the foil with cooking spray.
  • Divide the butter and marshmallows into three medium microwave-safe bowls, placing 1 tablespoon of butter and about 2 cups of marshmallows in each bowl.
  • Microwave one bowl until the butter has melted and the marshmallows have puffed, which should take around 60 seconds. Stir in the blue gel food coloring until the mixture is smooth and there are no streaks of food coloring left.
  • Quickly add 1 3/4 cups of rice cereal to the bowl and stir with a rubber spatula until the cereal is evenly coated. Transfer this mixture to the prepared baking dish and press it down into an even and compact layer. (You can spray your hands with a bit of cooking spray to prevent sticking when pressing the cereal mixture into the pan). Set it aside.
  • Repeat the process by microwaving another bowl of butter and marshmallows until melted and smooth. Stir this mixture together until well combined, creating the "white" layer. Stir in another 1 3/4 cups of rice cereal until evenly coated. Place this on top of the blue cereal treat layer and press it down until it is even and compact.
  • Repeat step 5 with the remaining bowl of butter and marshmallows, microwaving
