  • One large slice of fully cooked ham with bone
  • Two tablespoons of butter , divided
  • One medium-sized onion , finely diced
  • Two medium-sized carrots , finely diced
  • One clove of garlic , minced
  • One can (16 ounces) of great northern beans , with liquid
  • Two cups of water , or as required
  • Two large bay leaves
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • A quarter teaspoon of ground black pepper


  • Take the ham off the bone and cut it into small pieces.
  • Keep the bone aside.
  • In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the ham and cook it while stirring until it turns lightly brown, which should take around 4 minutes.
