  • 1 1/2 sticks (12 tbsp) of unsalted butter , at room temperature
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/4 cups of sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract
  • 3 oz of melted semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
  • Royal Icing (see recipe below)
  • Your preferred sprinkles and nonpareils for decorating
  • Two 1-pound boxes of confectioners sugar (about 7 1/2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp of meringue powder
  • Food coloring , such as gel coloring, if desired
