Know Your Cooking Oil

If you are always cooking, you probably come across several recipes that specify a cooking oil. This is an essential ingredient for most dishes. The most common cooking oil is vegetable oil but several types are available. Here are different types of common cooking oils and the proper way of using each of them:

Vegetable Oil

Vegetable oil is the commonly used oil in most kitchens. It is found frequently for use in various recipes and in frying. Vegetable oil is a blend of several oils like soybean, sunflower, corn and palm.

Canola Oil

Canola oil is said to be the healthiest cooking oil because of the low saturated fat content and high mono unsaturated fat. It is often used in frying but only for medium frying temperatures.

Corn Oil

Corn oil is relatively low on saturated and mono unsaturated fat. It is commonly used in margarine for frying and baking. It must be used only when frying on medium temperatures.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is low in saturated fat and has high Vitamin E content. Many manufacturers recognize that sunflower oil is healthy and they are now preferring to use this on snack foods. It can be used at home for frying, cooking and in preparing salad dressings.

Peanut Oil

Peanut oil is a good option for frying in high temperatures. It is commonly used during Thanksgiving since many people are using turkey fryers to fry turkeys.

Olive Oil

There are extra virgin, virgin, extra light and refined versions of the olive oil. There are different uses for the oil in cooking, frying, sauteing and as an ingredient. This is frequently used in salads and is considered the healthiest oils because it has high mono unsaturated fat and is known to help reduce the risk of heart disease. There are people who use it in their meals daily.

All oils should be kept at room temperature so that it will not be spoiled. Various types of oils are indicated in recipes but it all boils down to finding alternatives should you be cooking something and the oil listed in the ingredients is not available.ย
