  • One piece of green taffy , .55 ounces, for example, AirHeads® Watermelon
  • One container of frozen whipped topping , 12 ounces, such as Cool Whip, thawed.

  • Prepare the cake mix as instructed on the package to make 24 cupcakes.
  • Bake the cupcakes and let them cool for 15 minutes in the pan on a rack.
  • Transfer the cupcakes to a separate rack and allow them to cool completely.
  • Hull and chop approximately 8 strawberries to yield about 1 cup of chopped strawberries.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the chopped strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
  • Let the mixture stand at room temperature and toss it a few times until the strawberries become juicy, which should take around 15 minutes.
  • For the remaining 24 strawberries, place each one stem-side down on a cutting board.
  • Make two crisscross slices down the strawberry, almost cutting all the way through but leaving the stem intact.
  • Gently pull the 4 sections of the strawberry apart to create a butterfly shape.
  • Repeat steps 7-9 with the remaining strawberries.
  • Cut two thin strips of green taffy, each measuring approximately 1 inch long and 1 millimeter wide, to make the antennae.
  • Roll the taffy strips between your hands to form ropes and slightly curl up one end of each rope.
  • Repeat step 11 to create a pair of antennae for each of the remaining 23 butterflies.
  • Transfer the whipped topping to a pastry bag fitted with a medium open star tip.
