Smash Burgers

Are you craving a juicy, flavorful burger that’s packed with deliciousness? Look no further than the mouthwatering world of smash burgers! These tasty treats have gained popularity for their unique cooking method and mouthwatering results. In this article, we’ll dive into the world of smash burgers, exploring their origins, cooking techniques, and how to make your own at home.

What are Smash Burgers?

Imagine sinking your teeth into a burger with a perfectly crispy, caramelized crust, while still maintaining a tender and juicy center. That’s the magic of a smash burger. Unlike traditional burgers, where the patty is gently formed and left intact, smash burgers are made by smashing a ball of ground beef onto a hot griddle or skillet. This technique creates a thin patty with a deliciously crispy exterior.

The Origins of Smash Burgers

Smash burgers first gained popularity in the United States, particularly in the Midwest. They were originally created as a quick and affordable option for diners, but their deliciousness quickly caught on. Today, smash burgers can be found in various restaurants and burger joints across the country, loved for their simplicity and incredible flavor.

The Art of Smashing

Creating the perfect smash burger requires a few key techniques. Firstly, start with high-quality ground beef that has a good fat content. This will ensure a juicy and flavorful patty. Next, preheat your griddle or skillet to a high heat. Once hot, divide the ground beef into small balls and place them onto the cooking surface. Using a sturdy spatula or burger press, firmly smash down on each ball, creating a thin patty. Let the patty cook for a few minutes until a crispy crust forms, then flip and cook the other side to your desired level of doneness. Don’t forget to season with salt and pepper for that extra burst of flavor.

The Perfect Smash Burger Toppings

While the patty is the star of the show, the toppings can take your smash burger to the next level. Classic toppings include melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and a tangy sauce. But feel free to get creative! Add bacon, avocado, or even a fried egg for an extra indulgent twist. The possibilities are endless, so let your taste buds guide you.

Making Smash Burgers at Home

Craving a smash burger but don’t want to leave the comfort of your home? You’re in luck! Making smash burgers at home is easier than you might think. With a hot skillet or griddle and a few simple ingredients, you can recreate the magic of a restaurant-quality smash burger in your own kitchen. Plus, you have the freedom to customize your toppings and make it just the way you like it.

Conclusion

Smash burgers are a delicious and satisfying way to enjoy a burger that’s bursting with flavor. With their crispy crust and juicy center, they offer a unique eating experience that will leave you craving more. Whether you’re dining out or making them at home, smash burgers are a must-try for any burger lover. So why not give them a try and embark on a flavor-packed adventure?

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • ½ tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • ½ tsp white sugar
  • ½ tsp granulated garlic
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground beef (at least 20% fat) (, refrigerated until cold)
  • 4 hamburger buns (, split)
  • 1 tbsp butter (or as needed)
  • 4 slices Cheddar or Colby cheese
  • ½ small red onion (, sliced)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  1. In a small bowl, combine ketchup, mayonnaise, pickle relish, vinegar, white sugar, and garlic. Stir them together until well mixed. Season with salt and black pepper according to your taste. Cover the bowl and set it aside.
  2. Take the ground beef and divide it into 4 equal parts. Roll each part into a ball shape and refrigerate them until needed.
  3. Spread butter on the cut sides of each hamburger bun.
  4. Heat a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. If concerned about sticking, you can add a little vegetable oil to the skillet.
  5. Add two hamburger balls to the skillet and flatten them using the bottom of a small sauce pot or a spatula. Hold them in place until they are seared, which takes about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until a good crust forms, then flip them.
  6. Once the flipped side looks close to being done, place a cheese slice on top of each patty. Move the patties aside and place the buns, butter side down, in the skillet to toast them. Continue cooking the burgers until the cheese is melted and the meat is no longer pink in the center, which takes about 5 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
  7. Remove the toasted buns to a plate. Place a patty on each bottom bun. Spread
